Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for an armed robber who held up a Dollar General Store near DeLand Tuesday afternoon. While the robber pointed a gun at a female clerk at the store on East International Speedway Boulevard just east of DeLand, no shots were fired and no one was injured.
Deputies began converging on the crime scene after the robbery was reported to the Sheriff’s Office at 1:15 p.m. According to witnesses, the lone robber made off with an undetermined amount of money before bolting out of the store. Several customers who were in the business at the time huddled in a back room for safety. Patrol deputies along with motors units, K-9s, investigators and a Sheriff’s Office helicopter along with DeLand police units launched a search for the suspect, who was last seen running along Kepler Road. However, he is believed to have left the area in an awaiting get-away car -- a blue, 4-door Nissan Altima. The search was still ongoing more than an hour after the robbery. The suspect was described as an approximately 6’ tall Black man with short hair who was wearing black cargo shorts, a black v-neck shirt and dark-colored tennis shoes. Witnesses said the suspect had tattoos on his face.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers toll-free at (888) 277-TIPS. Callers to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $5,000.
