COMMUNITY UNITY DAY TO BENEFIT WEST VOLUSIA NON-PROFIT GROUPS
City of DeLand partnering with event, DeLand Police Chief-designate Jason Umberger to attend

Combining diversity, sports and family-friendly music, Community Unity Day will aim to bring residents from different backgrounds together and at the same time benefit nine non-profit organizations that help at-risk children in West Volusia.

The event, organized by the Color Line Roundtable and co-sponsored by the City of DeLand, will be from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Earl Brown Park, 750 S. Alabama Avenue. The day will feature five sporting events: a basketball tournament, a one-mile relay race around the park’s ponds, sack races, a team tug-of-war and a one mile untimed warm-up walk to kick-off the event.

“The goal of the event is to bring together diverse members of our community to participate in organized sports competitions, listen to family friendly live music and enjoy food in an atmosphere where mutual interest and respect can allow strangers to become friends,” said Don Kerr of the Color Line Roundtable.

The top three teams from each event will choose a non-profit organization that will be awarded a donation. The designated programs include Boys & Girls Club of DeLand; Catalyst Global Youth Initiatives; DeLand Dawgs Youth Sports; Hispanic American Group of Deltona; Man-Up (Mastering the Art of Navigation by Universal Principles; ROPSE (Right of Passage/Successful Encounters), Temple Learning Center; The House Next Door and The Neighborhood Center.

Free hotdogs and hamburgers are being provided by the Downtown Rotary Club of DeLand, while supplies last, and free water will be available. Sonny’s BBQ will have food for purchase. Live music will also be provided throughout the day.

Saturday’s event will also be an opportunity for residents to meet Police Chief-designate Jason Umberger, who will speak at about 10 a.m. that day. The DeLand Police Department, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and Volusia County Corrections will be among several groups participating in the event.

Organizations interested in donating or participating in the event please call 386-479-3007.
