DELAND POLICE TO LAUNCH OPERATOIN VIGILANT PROTECTOR

DeLand Police officers will be on the lookout for conditions that may put residents at risk of being a victim of a crime.

Operation Vigilant Protector is a proactive measure that will be implemented by DeLand Police to anticipate, recognize and ultimately attempt to prevent a crime from ever occurring.

When officers observe an unsafe condition, such as unsecured property in yards, an unlocked vehicle or an accumulation of mail or newspapers, that officer will try to make contact with the property owner. Other examples of unsafe conditions include valuables left unsecured, greenery or shrubs blocking windows or doors and unsecured doors.

If officers are unable to make contact with the property owner or resident, a card will be left to notify them in writing about the unsafe condition.

“Operation Vigilant Protector is an example of our commitment to excellence in policing. It aligns with our Police Department’s new mission statement which reads in part that we will safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, reduce the incidence and fear of crime and enhance public safety,”  Police Chief Jason Umberger said.
