TWO MEN ARRESTED IN THURSDAY MORNING CARJACKING INCIDENT

Two men are in custody after an elderly female says she was carjacked near a Catholic Church Thursday morning.

DeLand Police responded to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 359 West New York Avenue, about 8:15 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call that was initially reported as a strong arm robbery. But authorities quickly figured out that the two men had stolen the woman’s tan four-door Chrysler.

They didn’t get very far.

DeLand Police with the assistance of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office tracked the two men as they fled south, driving erratically and off-road. They eventually crashed the vehicle into some trees off South High Street and West Winnemissett Avenue and fled on foot before being captured.

The two suspects have been identified as David Leo Perkins III, 21, of Daytona Beach, and Darius Matthews, 20.

More information will be released as it becomes available.

Police Chief Jason Umberger will be available to talk to the media at 11 a.m. at the DeLand Police Department, 219 West Howry Avenue.
