DELAND POLICE SEEKING PARTICIPANTS FOR CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY

Residents wanting to know what police do on a daily basis are encouraged to sign up for the 18th annual Citizen Police Academy.

Classes will meet 7 to 10 p.m. every Thursday from September 7 through October 19.

Participants will get to learn about different units within the police department, participate in police scenarios and also get to meet Police Chief Jason Umberger. After graduating from the academy, participants may apply to become an alumni member, who are trained to assist officers during city events, patrol the city in specially-marked “citizen patrol” cars or use speed detection equipment.

Space is limited and the registration deadline is September 1. To complete an application, stop by the DeLand Police Department at 219 West Howry Avenue or email Officer Rod Hancock at hancockr@deland.org or call him at 386-626-7467.
