790 VEHICLES PASSED THROUGH DUI CHECKPOINT

On Friday, May 18th, 2018, the Port Orange Police Department conducted a DUI checkpoint in the 1300 Block of Dunlawton Ave. from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am. This checkpoint, along with other DUI prevention and enforcement efforts, was done to fulfil requirements for a FDOT grant received by POPD. A total of 790 vehicles passed through the checkpoint with the drivers of 158 vehicles being diverted for further contact.

There were no DUI arrests made, however one subject was arrested for no valid Driver’s License and open warrants from Colorado. A second driver was issued a criminal citation for Failure to Obey Lawful Order from Traffic Officer. The numerous contacts allowed for many positive interactions between our officers and both residents and visitors alike. “Don’t Drink and Drive” air fresheners were provided to those drivers who wished to receive them and stuffed animals were available for children in vehicles diverted. The educational and deterrence aspects of the operation appeared to be a success.
