New Major Tops List Of Sheriff's Office Promotions

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office bid farewell on Monday to one of its longest-serving commanders in recent personnel moves that paved the way for promotion of the agency’s newest major. On Monday Sheriff Ben Johnson formally promoted Rocky Norris to the rank of Major, where he will head up one of the agency’s three operating divisions. Other promotions on Monday included two other agency veterans who moved up the career ladder -- Brian Bosco to the rank of Captain and Tim Morgan to the rank of Lieutenant. The moves came as the Sheriff’s Office bid farewell to Major Terry Sanders, who is about to step down after having worked under three different Sheriffs during his more than 32-year career with the agency. “I’ve been blessed to have been a part of this agency,” Major Sanders said Monday morning during a ceremony in front of approximately 75 family, friends and co-workers.With Sanders’ last day with the Sheriff’s Office on Friday, Norris will assume command of the Support Services Division. In his new role, the 59-year-old Norris – who has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 25 years -- will oversee training, communications, evidence, fleet services and information systems for the Sheriff’s Office. It’s a big job, and Sheriff Johnson said he’s confident that Norris is up to the task. “It’s both an honor and a pleasure to present you with your Major’s badge,” Sheriff Johnson told Norris and the audience that assembled at the Deputy Stephen Saboda Training Center in Daytona Beach. “You’ve worked hard, you’ve earned it and you deserve it.” Norris began his career with the Sheriff’s Office in August 1986. Along the way, he has served as commander of the SWAT Team, was the agency’s first homeland security coordinator, was an assistant district commander in the Sheriff’s Office’s Holly Hill law enforcement headquarters and also commanded the Special Services Section. Prior to his promotion, Norris’ most recent assignment was as head of the agency’s Civil Section. Norris is married, has two children and has a Bachelor’s Degree in political science from the University of Florida. He also is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s Command Officers Development Course. For his part, the 56-year-old Sanders won’t be going far. He’s leaving the Sheriff’s Office to take a position with County government as the new Emergency Medical Services Director. The position was created as a result of EVAC Ambulance coming under County government on Oct. 1.

Meanwhile, Norris’ prior assignment heading up the Civil Section will be taken over by the Sheriff’s Office’s newest Captain. The 36-year-old Bosco comes from a law enforcement family, with his father having served in the Sheriff’s Office during a career in which he worked his way up to the rank of Captain before retiring in 1999. Bosco’s father is out of the country and was unable to attend Monday’s ceremony. However, Sheriff Johnson noted that he had received a call from Bob Bosco to tell the Sheriff how proud he was of his son’s accomplishments. Brian Bosco has been with the Sheriff’s Office for more than 13 years, starting in March 1998. He’s a certified bomb technician and commander of the Sheriff’s Office’s Bomb Disposal Unit. Bosco previously served in patrol and training, and his most recent assignment was as assistant commander in the Sheriff’s Office’s New Smyrna Beach headquarters.

Morgan will fill Bosco’s post as assistant district commander in the New Smyrna Beach law enforcement headquarters. The 43-year-old Morgan started with the Sheriff’s Office in December 2000 and has previously served in road patrol, the Deltona Street Crimes Unit and Internal Affairs.
