Volusia County Honors School Crossing Guards

They work their posts at busy intersections each and every school day, ensuring that students have a safe journey to and from campus. But being a school crossing guard is much more than that. Employed by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Volusia’s 176 school crossing guards and seven supervisors also help promote safety awareness for the motoring public and teach elementary school children good pedestrian safety habits as well. “They do us a job that is absolutely great,” Sheriff Ben Johnson told the County Council Thursday morning, as a large group of school crossing guards looked on. “I’m very proud of them.” 

The County Council also heaped praise on the school crossing guards, officially declaring Friday to be a day all across Volusia to say thanks to the guards for their dedication and service. “I see them out there in all kinds of inclement weather and still have a big smile on their faces, waving to the people when they go by and still worrying about our kids,” said Council Chair Frank Bruno. “You all do a great job.” The rest of the council heartily agreed, unanimously adopting a proclamation declaring Feb. 3 to be Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. “School crossing guards provide a valuable service to our community,” states the proclamation. “The County Council wishes to thank and honor our school crossing guards and supervisors for their tireless dedication and commitment to children’s safety.” 

Volusia’s school crossing guard program has long been regarded as a leader in training and safety measures. It was named the top school crossing guard program in the state twice in the past six years. And two years ago, one of Volusia’s crossing guards was named the best crossing guard in Florida. But even more than the accolades and accomplishments, County Council member Joie Alexander said a more significant measure of success is how beloved the crossing guards are by the elementary school students they safely shepherd across busy streets every day. “They do love you so much, and you’re such an important part of their lives,” said Alexander. “I certainly salute you today and say thank you for all that you do.”
