MOTORCYCLIST DIES FIVE DAYS AFTER CRASH IN DELTONA

A 47-year-old motorcyclist died Monday afternoon at an area hospital, five days after the victim was involved in a chain-reaction crash in Deltona. Two other vehicles were involved in the crash, but no one else was injured.

The accident occurred late Wednesday morning when a vehicle traveling eastbound on Saxon Boulevard made a sudden turn onto Diane Terrace. While not directly involved in the crash, the vehicle’s abrupt turn set off a chain reaction behind it. The first vehicle behind the turning car was forced to stop short, the second vehicle hit the one in front of it and then the motorcycle crashed into the next vehicle in the line. The motorcycle rider, Timothy Ervin -- who wasn’t wearing a helmet -- was thrown from his bike and sustained severe head injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, where he underwent surgery. Initially in critical condition, Ervin who is from Altatamonte Springs, was recovering in the intensive care unit and had been upgraded to stable condition. However, his condition took a turn for the worse and he died at the hospital at 12:39 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

The crash is under investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
