Update: 03/16/17 - 11:30 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Office today obtained an arrest warrant for Michael McCabe on two additional counts of lewd or lascivious molestation.

The new charges stem from the allegations of a 10-year-old girl who came forward to the state Department of Children and Families/Port Orange PD on March 3, the same day as the initial VCSO news release was issued seeking McCabe’s arrest in two similar cases.

The Sheriff’s Office Child Exploitation Unit investigated the March 3 allegations and found probable cause to charge McCabe with the molestation of the 10-year-old victim and her 11-year-old brother.

The victims’ mother told a VCSO detective she met McCabe in 2015 when he was volunteering at Holly Hill School. She said McCabe moved into the family’s home that same year on the condition he would babysit her children and help around the house. She said he later moved with the family when they left their home in Holly Hill and moved into a home in Port Orange.

The 10-year-old told detectives McCabe touched her inappropriately over her clothes on at least two occasions while playing a game called “Stranger Danger,” in which he would portray himself as a stranger and the children would have to try and protect themselves. On the last occasion, the girl said McCabe grabbed her and touched her breasts over her clothes until she kicked him and ran out of the room.

Her 11-year-old brother told detectives McCabe touched his private area over his clothing and threatened to hurt a family member if he told anyone.

Sheriff’s detectives are continuing to investigate any allegations as they are received. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Child Exploitation Unit at 386-323-3574.

BABYSITTER SOUGHT ON CHARGES OF MOLESTATION, SEXUAL BATTERY

With four victims identified – and potentially others still out there – detectives with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office are asking for the public’s help in locating and arresting a suspect wanted on charges of molesting multiple children after befriending their families, moving into their homes and babysitting their girls.

The suspect, 47-year-old Michael J. McCabe of Port Orange, also known as “Uncle Mikey,” was not at his listed address on Manhattan Way when detectives went there this morning. He has warrants out for his arrest on three counts of lewd or lascivious molestation and one count of sexual battery of a victim under the age of 12.

Detectives believe McCabe befriended families in need, gained their trust and moved in with them to gain access to their children. In January, the victims in the first case (two girls, now ages 15 and 16) told detectives McCabe moved in as their babysitter several years ago and molested them repeatedly over the years. They said the abuse occurred when they were between the ages of roughly 7 and 11 years old, and that it continued after he moved out of their home in the Shady Oaks Mobile Home Park in Ormond Beach and started living with another family.

That case led to the identification of another girl, now age 9, who told detectives her babysitter “Uncle Mikey” molested her starting when she was 5 years old and he was living with her family in Holly Hill.

Today, an additional child victim, now age 10, came forward to the Port Orange Police Department with similar allegations. The Sheriff’s Office Child Exploitation Unit is taking on that investigation.

McCabe is believed to be in the Port Orange area, and authorities including the VCSO Crime Suppression Team and U.S. Marshals Task Force are actively looking for him. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Child Exploitation Unit at 386-323-3574 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 888-277-TIPS or through the app available at westopcrime.com. Crime Stoppers tipsters will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $5,000.
