Escape Charges Added After DUI Suspect Bolts From Custody

DUI SUSPECT ADDS ESCAPE TO CHARGES AFTER BOLTING FROM CUSTODY

He could have walked away from a traffic stop Tuesday night with nothing more than a written warning about a burned out headlight. Instead, 39-year-old Danial Brown ended up with a dog bite and trip to jail on charges of DUI, escape and resisting.

The episode started at about 10:20 p.m. when a Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol pulled over Brown in the vicinity of Providence Boulevard and Tivoli Drive in Deltona. The deputy was initially planning to give Brown a warning and send him on his way. But when Brown got out of the car, deputies immediately noticed that he was unsteady on his feet and stumbling around, had glassy eyes and slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. Suspecting Brown was intoxicated, deputies administered field sobriety exercises. After Brown had trouble maintaining his balance, deputies had seen enough and brought him to the Sheriff’s Office’s Deltona headquarters on Providence Boulevard for processing. Brown, though, had other ideas and managed to slip out of his handcuffs that were securing him to a bench, exited the holding cell and ran out the back door. Deputies quickly established a perimeter and launched a search for the escaped prisoner. About an hour later, at approximately 2:08 a.m., a Sheriff’s K-9 found Brown hiding in some thick brush along Providence Boulevard and secured him with a bite to the shoulder.

Brown (DOB: 3/21/78), who resides in Deltona, was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries and then transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach, where he was being held without bond.
