The identification of the persons involved in this morning’s shooting is as follows:
- Randel Humphreys, age 48 (DOB: 1/20/69)
- Amy Humphreys, age 49 (DOB: 5/9/67)
- Deputy Andrew Jenkins, age 30. Deputy Jenkins was hired by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in May 2015.
The firearm used by Randel Humphreys was a flare gun. He remains hospitalized at Central Florida Regional Hospital and has been charged with attempted 2nd-degree murder, attempted felony murder and aggravated battery. Amy Humphreys is the victim in the attempted 2nd-degree murder and Deputy Jenkins is the victim in the attempted felony murder. Amy Humphreys was treated and released from Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City.
Randel Humphreys also is accused of striking Maranda Humphreys, the couple’s 19-year-old daughter, in the head with the flare gun, resulting in the aggravated battery charge.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CALL IN DELTONA SPARKS SHOOTING
A domestic violence call in Deltona sparked gunfire early Monday morning when the suspect emerged at the front door with a firearm and refused multiple commands to drop the weapon. The suspect fired the gun, prompting a Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy to return fire. The suspect was struck multiple times in the arm and leg and was conscious and alert as he was being loaded onto a Sheriff’s Office helicopter for transport to the hospital. No one else was injured in the gunfire.
Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 300-block of Champlain Drive after a 911 call was received at 1:35 a.m. reporting a domestic quarrel between a husband and wife. The victim told the Sheriff’s Office that her husband tried to drown her in the swimming pool. About three minutes after the first 911 call, a neighbor called 911 to report that the woman had come to his house seeking help and that she was soaking wet and banging on his door. Deputies began arriving at the scene at 1:37 a.m. About five minutes later, the husband emerged at the front door holding a firearm and the deputy ordered him to put it down. A resident who lives on the street behind Champlain Drive reported that he was on his back porch at the time and heard someone say “drop the gun” multiple times before the shooting started.
The 48-year-old husband was flown to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford for treatment of his injuries, while his 49-year-old wife was taken by ambulance to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City to receive medical attention. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave with pay and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be investigating, both standard practice in deputy-involved shootings.
