CRIME STRATEGY MEETINGS EXPAND TO INCLUDE ALL OF WEST VOLUSIA

Launched last month in Deltona, the focus of Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s bi-monthly crime strategy meetings is expanding to include all of the Sheriff’s Office’s jurisdiction on the west side of the county.

Called CompStat, the program combines cutting-edge technology with various databases and the plotting of offenses on a map to help guide the agency’s strategy for fighting crime, spotting trends and solving cases. Sheriff Chitwood rolled out the program at an April 13 meeting to review recent crimes in Deltona and get an update on the investigations into unsolved cases. The meetings are held every two weeks and are open to the public. The next CompStat meeting is this Thursday and will include a detailed review of crimes not only in Deltona, but in DeBary and unincorporated Northwest Volusia County as well. Thursday’s meeting will be 8:30 a.m. at Deltona City Hall, 2345 Providence Blvd. “While the meeting will be in Deltona, the information that’s presented should be of interest to anyone on the west side of the county who wants to stay plugged in to what’s happening and take an active role in the public safety of our community,” said Sheriff Chitwood. “These CompStat meetings help us develop policing strategies and direct our resources in a way that best meets the community’s needs. And we can’t do that without the public’s input.”

The Sheriff’s Office’s CompStat crime reports are posted on the agency’s web site and can be accessed by clicking here.
