MAN ARRESTED IN STABBING OUTSIDE OF DAYTONA FOOD MART

An altercation Sunday night outside of a food mart near Daytona Beach sparked a stabbing that sent one man to the hospital and landed a second man in jail on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Volusia County Sheriff’s detectives are still investigating to determine what started the fracas.

Deputies dispatched to Kelly’s Food Mart on Derbyshire Road began arriving at 6:45 p.m. to find a store clerk rendering aid to the victim, 57-year-old David Davidson. Davidson was on his back by the main entrance to the store, his shirt covered in blood from lacerations to his face and torso. The victim wasn’t able to provide much information about what happened, but he did point out the suspect to deputies -- 51-year-old William Christy. Christy (DOB: 4/25/66) was still at the scene and sporting two small lacerations to his face and nose. Deputies also retrieved a pocket knife and a metal pipe from the scene. The knife was found on the sidewalk not far from where Christy was standing.

The store clerk told deputies that Davidson was a regular customer who had been in the store several times on Sunday and appeared to be drunk. At around 6:40 p.m., the victim came into the store, bought a beer and then walked out. Minutes later, he came back into the store saying he had been stabbed. He was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where he underwent surgery and was in the intensive care unit listed in stable condition. Christy claimed that the victim had struck him with the metal pipe, but when Sheriff’s detectives tried to interview him, Christy declined to answer their questions. He was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach, where he was initially being held without bond. Sheriff’s detectives wrote in the charging affidavit: “Based on the evidence at the scene, and the victim identifying the defendant as the person who stabbed him, detectives determined some type of physical altercation occurred outside of the store and the defendant stabbed the victim multiple times for unknown reasons.”
