The suspect in this case is 28-year-old Justin A. Kaegael (DOB 5/22/1989) of Paisley. Kaegael is charged with two counts of carjacking and one count each of kidnapping and grand theft of a motor vehicle. Additional charges are pending.

The deputies involved in the shooting were David Teske, 33 (hire date 4/8/2013), and Bryan Luoma, 48 (hire date 2/17/2003).

CARJACKING SUSPECT AT WHEEL OF STOLEN TRUCK SHOT BY DEPUTIES

A report of a carjacking near DeLand on Tuesday led to a deputy-involved shooting near Daytona Beach about 30 minutes later, after the fleeing suspect carjacked yet another motorist and was met by responding Volusia County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies responded to the initial carjacking call around 4:07 p.m. at the Discount Market at 1100 W. Euclid Ave., DeLand. There, deputies learned the suspect stole his boyfriend’s vehicle while the boyfriend struggled with him. The boyfriend was dragged by the vehicle and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect then crashed the stolen vehicle into a pickup truck. Then he stole another vehicle belonging to two people who stopped to help the boyfriend.

The suspect took that vehicle to eastbound I-4 and ultimately to Bellevue Avenue in Daytona Beach, where he carjacked another vehicle and took control of it. Responding deputies fired on the suspect, wounding him. No deputies were injured in the incident.

The suspect was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds and was expected to survive. He’s currently charged with violation of probation; other charges against him are pending and will be released in a future update.

The names of the suspect and the deputies involved in the shooting will also be released in a future update. The two deputies who fired are being placed on administrative leave with pay as is standard in all deputy-involved shootings. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, also standard.
