VCSO, DELAND PD PARTNERING IN THIS YEAR’S ‘KICKS 4 GUNS’ EVENT

Looking to get rid of an unwanted firearm? Thursday will be a great time to do it in exchange for a $50 gift card and no questions asked during Central Florida’s annual Kicks 4 Guns event.

This year, the DeLand Police Department is teaming up with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office as part of the program designed to get unwanted firearms off the streets. The event will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, August 17, at the Sanborn Center, 815 S. Alabama Avenue, DeLand.

People turning in the firearms are asked to have it unloaded and in the trunk of their vehicle. In exchange for the firearm, participants will be given a $50 gift card and citizens participating will remain anonymous. Each household is limited to one gift card.

If a firearm is found to have been reported stolen it will either be placed into evidence or law enforcement officials will make an attempt to return it to the original owner. All other surrendered guns will be destroyed following the event.

Now in its 19th year, the Kicks for Guns program was started by an Orlando area radio host who was concerned about youths getting robbed for their brand-name sneakers and the program has removed nearly 10,000 unwanted guns since its inception. Daytona Beach, Sanford and the Orlando police departments are among the organizations participating this year.
