Sheriff's Office Donating Computers To Campbell Middle School As Students Push To Improve

SHERIFF’S OFFICE DONATING COMPUTERS TO CAMPBELL MIDDLE SCHOOL AS STUDENTS PUSH TO IMPROVE

On Tuesday afternoon, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood and staff will be delivering 25 computers to students at Campbell Middle School in Daytona Beach – the first delivery of retired VCSO computer equipment intended to help Campbell students improve and advance in education.

The 25 desktop computers and monitors will be followed by 22 laptops that will be available once a new shipment of replacement laptops arrives in the coming weeks. The donation to Campbell was approved by the Volusia County Council last week at its Thursday, Jan. 18, meeting.

“We can put this equipment to good use, give it a second life in a classroom and provide kids at Campbell one more tool to succeed,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Monday. “I think this is a win for everyone, most importantly the students who need and deserve all the support we can give them.”

The idea came from Bob Davis, CEO/President of the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County, which has “adopted” more than 30 schools in Volusia County to provide students with equipment and other support. He sent out a call for donations last fall after meeting with Campbell’s principal and others to discuss what the school needed.

Campbell Middle School, which had received a D grade from the Florida Department of Education for several years in the past, recently improved that grade to a C, and students are now working toward the goal of earning an A.

“The need is great, and we have to support our school system,” Davis said. “These young people should be able to go from a C to an A, and it makes us very proud that these kids want to attempt to better themselves with our help in the community.”

VCSO will deliver the first 25 computers to Campbell Middle (625 S. Keech St., Daytona Beach) at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 23).
