UPDATE: April 5, 2019

Today, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office charged a 16-year-old Oak Hill boy with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his younger cousin in February 2018.

The defendant, Traves L. Plummer (DOB 2/6/2003), initially told detectives that the victim, 14-year-old Ernesto Sierra, shot himself inside a bathroom at Plummer’s house at 287 Wood Avenue, Oak Hill. But several inconsistencies started to emerge in Plummer’s account of the incident.

While the Plummer home had security cameras outside and inside the house, and detectives were able to obtain footage from before and after the shooting, any footage of the shooting itself appeared to have been erased.

DNA test results indicated only Plummer’s DNA was present on the Jimenez 9mm handgun that killed Sierra.

Detectives determined it was physically impossible for Sierra to have shot himself.

Sheriff’s Office detectives worked closely with prosecutors from the State Attorney’s Office on this investigation and met with Sierra’s family this afternoon to inform them of the charging decision.

Plummer was arrested on his warrant for manslaughter this evening on the 700 block of South Beach Street in Daytona Beach and transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

DETECTIVES INVESTIGATING DEATH OF 14-YEAR-OLD KILLED BY GUNSHOT

Relatives reported gunshot wound was self-inflicted

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting incident that took the life of a 14-year-old boy Saturday night in Oak Hill.

Deputies responded to 287 Wood Avenue in Oak Hill around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on a report of a juvenile with a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim, Ernesto Sierra-Plummer of Oak Hill, was transported to Florida Hospital New Smyrna, where he succumbed to his wound at 8:44 p.m.
Relatives of Sierra-Plummer were in the residence at the time of the shooting but said they did not witness the incident occur. Two of his cousins reported hearing a gunshot and finding Sierra-Plummer shot in the neck. One cousin reported Sierra-Plummer had a handgun in his hand, and the other reported that the 14-year-old said he'd shot himself.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation and additional details are not available for release at this time.
