HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT CHARGED WITH FELONY AFTER MAKING THREAT TO BLOW UP, SHOOT UP CLASSROOM

A 14-year-old student at Heritage Middle School in Deltona is facing criminal charges today after he made statements in class about blowing up and shooting up his classroom.

The Osteen teenager was charged with making a false report of a bomb and disrupting a school function around 10:20 a.m. today.

The student’s teacher reported the 14-year-old came to class and began to disrupt the class by making jokes about the recent school shooting in Broward County. He stated that he was going to blow up the classroom. The teacher addressed his comments and warned him that they were inappropriate, but the student continued by saying he would shoot up the classroom.

The student then refused to take his seat in class and continued to make statements about shooting up the classroom. He picked up a stapler and began shooting staples onto the ground. The teacher then had the student removed from class.

While the student told a deputy he was only joking, has no conflicts with any students or staff and has no access to firearms, his actions earned him a felony charge and a misdemeanor charge.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office will continue to respond to all reports of threatening statements with thorough investigations, and little tolerance will be shown for jokes. Anyone who witnesses a threat or is aware of suspicious activity that might indicate potential violence is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 911 in an emergency or via the non-emergency line at 386-248-1777.
