VOLUSIA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HOSTS PRESCRIPTION TAKEBACK DAY – SAT., APRIL 28

Saturday’s the day to bring unwanted prescription medication to any of our district offices from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) national event.

Residents can safely dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Disposal is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.

The national campaign, which began in 2010, aims to help prevent overdose deaths and accidental poisonings by encouraging residents to clean out medicine cabinets and get rid of unwanted drugs.  Since it began, the Take-Back Day has collected more than 9 million pounds of medicine. Last fall, 912,305 pounds of prescription drugs were collected. Since most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, this is a great way to help curb the potential for such abuse.

The Sheriff’s Office’s drop-off sites on Saturday will be located at the agency’s district headquarters in DeLand, Deltona, DeBary, Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach. Those locations are:

For those who miss Saturday’s event, the Sheriff’s Office offers a continuous program where residents can drop off unwanted prescription drugs at a district office or make arrangements to have a deputy pick up their unwanted prescription medicine by calling the Sheriff’s Office’s Communications Center (386-248-1777).
