MAN APPREHENDED IN EARLY-MORNING INCIDENT AT DAYTONA BEACH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

A man wearing only a pair of socks and making statements about a bomb was apprehended early this morning at Daytona Beach International Airport, prompting an evacuation of the facility as Volusia County sheriff’s deputies cleared the terminal. No explosives were found, and normal airport activities resumed shortly thereafter.

Deputies responded around 6:22 a.m. to a report of a suspicious person at the airport. That person, 25-year-old John T. Greenwood, had gone into an airport restroom that was under construction, placed a bag inside a hole in a wall and emerged from the restroom without wearing his clothes. Greenwood went to the baggage claim area, where he was encountered on the run by responding deputies. Greenwood did not immediately comply with commands to lie down on the floor, and he made statements indicating a bomb was about to go off in the airport. A deputy deployed his Taser on Greenwood, who was then taken into custody.

Bomb and K-9 units cleared the terminal and confirmed there were no explosive devices. The airport was reopened around 9:40 a.m.

Video from this incident is available here.

The criminal charges pending against Greenwood are as follows:
