9 Juveniles Charged With Rioting At Volusia County Juvenile Detention Facility

9 JUVENILES CHARGED WITH RIOTING AT VOLUSIA COUNTY JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITY

2 Staff Members Sustain Minor Injuries

Nine juvenile inmates at the Volusia County Regional Detention Facility in Daytona Beach face charges after a 30-minute melee Sunday that resulted in two staff members suffering minor injuries.

Juveniles occupying a common area of the facility at 3840 Old Deland Road took keys from a staff member, pulled televisions off walls, and refused to return to their cells when commanded. 

Volusia County sheriff's deputies were called at 12:07 p.m. to the facility, which is a 60-bed facility that serves youth detained by various circuit courts. Youth are detained pending adjudication, disposition or placement in a commitment facility. The following are being charged with inciting a riot and resisting without violence in the incident:

  • Zion Counts, 17
  • Jahrece Austell, 17
  • Terrion  Whitaker, 13
  • Jemari Overstreet, 18
  • Eugene Green, 13
  • Stephen Hawkins, 14
  • K'veon Jiles, 13
  • Davion Smith, 15
  • Tyler Gibson, 16

In addition, Counts, Austell, Whitaker, Overstreet, Green and Hawkins were charged with battery on detention staff. Austell is also being charged with strong-arm robbery for forcibly taking cell keys from detention staff.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
