DNA Hit Leads to Surprise Burglary Arrest for VCSO

Patience was rewarded for sheriff’s detectives when DNA results came back on a burglary suspect unexpectedly linked to a DeLand residential burglary in July.

Kevin Joseph Hutton, 31, (DOB) 4/8/1987) was already in jail after being arrested for a July 2018 burglary on Trinidad Street in DeLand.

On Tuesday (Nov. 20), he was additionally charged after DNA results surprised detectives by linking him to the scene of a second burglary, which occurred July 7, 2018.

Hutton, a known burglar and violent felony offender, faces new charges of burglary, dealing in stolen property, grand theft and false ownership to a second-hand dealer for a residential burglary in the 2000 block of Penncrest Ct., DeLand. In that burglary, a male resident arrived home and found that someone had entered the residence while everyone was away, stealing several pieces of jewelry.

Through investigative means, DNA was discovered from the Penncrest burglary and sent for testing. On Tuesday, detectives were notified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that the DNA results matched Hutton. 

“This is another example of how important it is to process scenes. We rely on the marvel of DNA technology,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “This is a great job and gets another violent offender off the streets.”

In addition to the new burglary charges, Hutton violated his probation as a violent offender. He was on probation until 2022 for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He remains at the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bail allowed.
