STUDENT ARRESTED AFTER LOADED GUN DISCOVERED IN BACKPACK AT ATLANTIC HIGH

A student at Atlantic High School in Port Orange is facing a felony charge after a police officer found a loaded gun in his backpack.

The gun was discovered in the 17-year-old’s backpack after Daytona Beach police went to Atlantic High to interview him about a shooting case in Daytona Beach.

The .45 caliber pistol had the hammer cocked back, with one round in the chamber and four rounds in the magazine.

There were no threats made prior to the discovery of the gun.

The defendant is Timothy Eugene Coates, 17 (DOB 6/6/2001) of Daytona Beach. A school resource deputy charged Coates with possessing a firearm on a school campus, a felony.

The Daytona Beach Police Department is continuing its investigation.
