Pine Ridge High School Student Killed In Crash At School Entrance

PINE RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT KILLED IN CRASH AT SCHOOL ENTRANCE

A sophomore at Pine Ridge High School was killed this morning in a head-on crash outside the entrance of the school. Five others, including two younger children, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.

The Pine Ridge student who lost his life was 15-year-old Joshua T. Durner (DOB 6/22/2003). Durner was eastbound on Howland Boulevard around 6:50 a.m. in a 2006 Hyundai Elantra when he turned into the school entrance in the path of a westbound 2017 Nissan Pathfinder.

The Pathfinder hit Durner’s vehicle, and a 2015 Nissan pickup behind the Pathfinder was unable to avoid the crash.

The Pathfinder, driven by 34-year-old Dayana Garcia of Port Orange, was carrying an adult male passenger and two children, ages 3 and 1. The children did not have any significant injuries. Garcia is being evaluated for a hip injury and her passenger, 33-year-old Angelo Rodriguez, was admitted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for monitoring of some injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening.

The pickup was driven by 63-year-old Francisco Pinto, who had a minor back injury and was taken to AdventHealth Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the crash, but no charges or traffic citations are pending at this time. Durner was the sole occupant of his vehicle and did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt.

Grief counselors are responding to Pine Ridge High School today, and the Sheriff’s Office sends its condolences to Joshua’s family and friends.
