STOLEN VEHICLES LEAD DETECTIVES TO CHOP SHOP INVESTIGATION
3 Arrested in DeLeon Springs
A recent string of thefts of automobiles, golf carts and a jet ski led Volusia Sheriff’s detectives to investigate a chop shop operation in DeLeon Springs, which culminated this week with three arrests and more are expected.
The investigation began March 4 with the theft of a golf cart from a home on Spring Garden Ranch Road, DeLeon Springs. A few days later, the golf cart was found at 1210 Night Owl Ct., DeLeon Springs, with its roof removed.
Soon, additional vehicles were reported stolen. In each case -- the investigation revealed two golf carts, three passenger vehicles and a jet ski and trailer – all were subsequently located near, at or connected to 1210 Night Owl Court. The property is located on a dead-end road with few neighbors. The homeowner recently died, leaving two acquaintances living at the property.
During their monthlong investigation, detectives developed probable cause to arrest three defendants for operating a chop shop. A chop shop is any area where people have altered, dismantled, reassembled, concealed or disguised the identity of a stolen motor vehicle.
The defendants were arrested Tuesday and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail:
--Andrew Kean, 25 (DOB 07-14-1994), five counts of unarmed burglary of an unoccupied structure or conveyance; operating a chop shop; three counts of grand theft less than $100,000; introduction of contraband into a detention facility; possession of paraphernalia. He remains in custody on $51,000 bail.
--Dawn Gamberg, 52 (DOB 07-18-1967), charged with own/operate/conduct/aid & abet a chop shop. She remains in custody on $5,000 bail.
--Harry Marrison, 43 (DOB 02-19-1977), charged with own/operate/conduct/aid & abet chop shop, two counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle less than $100,000. He remains in jail on $15,000 bail.
