PIERSON WOMAN KILLED IN CRASH WITH TRAIN

A Pierson woman lost her life Saturday morning when her vehicle was hit by an Amtrak passenger train.

The crash happened shortly before 7:40 a.m. at the Washington Avenue railroad crossing in Pierson. The driver, 43-year-old Rebecca Bird, and her dog were pronounced deceased at the scene when paramedics arrived.

The preliminary investigation of the crash indicates Bird drove her vehicle, a Chrysler minivan, under the railroad crossing arm, which was down and flashing red, and collided with the front of the train.

The Sheriff’s Office is handling the crash investigation.
